Defeat for Wiltshire CCC 1st XI in second game of NCCA Trophy

Buckinghamshire won the toss and elected to field. The weather forecast was not good, but fortunately the rain held off all day and after a delayed start the game was able to proceed without interruption.  Wiltshire’s Wadworth Man of the Match, Jake Goodwin, maintained his good form and hit 68 precious runs for Wiltshire, meanwhile the Wiltshire batsmen contrived to give Buckinghamshire catching practice with 9 of the 10 wickets falling to catches. Ed young, 22, stayed with Jake Goodwin to provide support in the best partnership of the innings 60 runs until he fell to a splendid catch on the boundary by Alexei Korvezee. The next best partnership saw Josh Croom, 22, and Joe King, 15 not out, add 38 runs for the 10th wicket.  Edward Bragg 4 for 29 was the pick of the Buckinghamshire bowlers with Cameron Parsons 3 for 44, Stephen Croft 2 for 35 and AJ Woodland 1 for 25 completing the task.

On a pitch with a reputation for high scores Alexei Kervezee (Worcestershire 2008- 2017 and  a Netherlands international at just 15 years of age) showed his pedigree with a blistering assault on the Wiltshire bowlers hitting 54 runs from just 22 balls until he  was finally caught in the deep by Joe King off Ed Young’s bowling. Chris Marlow fell almost immediately to a fine direct hit run out by Ed Young.  Sadly, there was to be little more success for the Wiltshire bowlers as Conrad Louth 44 and Edward Bragg 58 continued the assault as Buckinghamshire raced to their target.  They perished just before achieving their goal with Bragg caught in the deep off Joe King’s bowling and Louth falling LBW to Ed Young. And so it was left to Richardson 3 not out and Payne 9 not out to finish the task with  a massive 122 balls to spare.

On the day Wiltshire were well beaten, but they know they can do much better.  The batsmen need to avoid giving the opposition too much catching practice and the bowlers need to avoid bowling too many ‘boundary’ balls – Significantly 126 runs of the Buckinghamshire total came from boundaries.  Next stop Warminster and hopefully a much-improved performance against Staffordshire.
