Wiltshire CCC fall to narrow defeat against Cornwall in NCCA Championship

Cornwall won the toss and elected to field. Wiltshire openers Jack Mynott 51 and Dylan Church 34 put on 82 for the first wicket, but that promising start suddenly changed to 124 for 6 with Max Tryfonos 5 for 69 causing problems.  Only Tom Cullen 74 stood firm sharing stands with Harry Broderick 26 and Chris Aubrey 33 which saw the total rise to 265 all out.

In reply Cornwall found runs equally hard to come by with the overnight score on 93 for 5.  The pace of Josh Croom 2 for 28 removed both openers until Wadworth Man of the Match Joe King 6 for 56 began to weave his magic. On day 2 Cornwall skipper Paul Smith 48 and  Max Tryfonos 38 enabled the score to get closer to Wiltshire with Tommy Sturgess adding 22 to raise the score to 183 all out and Wiltshire with a first innings lead of 82.  Wiltshire were hoping to significantly build on this lead, but Max Tryfonos 5 for  35 had other ideas as Wiltshire crumbled to 109 all out with only Jack Mynott 38 offering any serious resistance.  This left Cornwall with a target of 192 for victory and by close of play they had moved on to 133 for 4 with Xavie Clarke 52 and Will MacVicar 45 standing firm.

Day 3 brought frustration to both sides as the weather caused a long delay before the match could get underway. It was late afternoon before play could continue. Wiltshire hopes were kept alive by a further 4 wickets falling with skipper Ed Young taking 4 for 105 and Joe King taking his match tally to 10 wickets with a further 4 for 67.  But Cornwall were not to be denied as Tommy Sturgess 15 not out and Ellis Whiteford 5 not out saw them comfortably home with plenty of time and overs to spare  in a game of fluctuating fortunes. In a match dominated by spin Joe King and Max Tryfonos each took 10 wickets and caused continuous problems for the batsmen.

Wiltshire need to build on the positives and eliminate the negatives as they prepare for their tussle with Dorset next week at South Wilts CC.
